I consider this routine as primarily for use with CCM3 output because the input variable in_date is output naturally with the CCM3 history files. Additionally, there is a keyword in this procedure that deals with a little quirk in CCM3 output regarding monthly means. But any input data that follows the CCM3 convention regarding date input (i.e. integer yyyymmdd with leading zeros absent) should work with this function.
